Igor the Pug models for Aunt Pattys Gourmutt Bakery.

I really love the buy local concept and was happy when this great local business agreed to have me do some product photography for them. I was blown away when I saw the gorgeous treats that Erin from Aunt Patty’s Gourmutt bakery makes locally in London Ontario. They look so good I want to eat them! Igor the pug who has been in a bunch of movies and tv shows was out amazing model, I have never seen a dog so well trained that they can be surrounded in treats and not be eating them all straight away (he did get to enjoy some at the end).

Pet model search winners Paco and Bandit

In July I ran a facebook competition with Pawsitively Unique Designs to find some pet models for her designs. Paco the chiwawa did an amazing job modeling the small designs – including two of my faves the bumblebee and ladybug. Bandit was a natural with modelling the medium sized designs, my faves being the structured coats! I had shared a couple of the shots from this shoot in the lead up to Pawloosa on my facebook page and also on display at my booth on the big day! I had so much fun (even though I’m still sunburnt) and the offer I had that day is still available- book any session (prices here) and get a free 5×7 professional album (worth $100). Contact me to take advantage of the offer which can be used as a gift certificate or for a session anytime in 2013.

The dogs were both so well behaved we got through all of the outfits so quickly I was able to do a quick shot of Bandit’s mom and her niece at the end 🙂

Swallow and Twig nautical shoot

You may remember the name Swallow and Twig from my last shoot with the Halifax artist and Jewellery designer which was shot in the Public Gardens just over a year ago. That shoot was heavily inspired by the jewellery, which included some designs which reminded me of the movie UP! Similarly this shoot was heavily inspired by the jewellery, this time mainly consisting of nautical themed pieces from her Nautical 2012 series,  including- Aquatic, Sailor Jerry and Marina. We headed to my favourite harbour-side location in the eastern passage at Fishermans Cove at sunset and then when we lost light I finished up a few of the pieces the next day picking berries. If you’re thinking about starting Christmas shopping (It’s my birthday tomorrow so that means it is 8 weeks until Christmas) I’d highly recommend getting in early and making an order with Mary to custom make you a piece of her wearable art.
Big thankyou to my models Zach, Aiden, Steph, Laura and Cameron.

Models Brianna and Robynn for Atlantic Art Couture

This summer I was lucky enough to be asked again by east coast Jewellery designer Jessie of Atlantic Art Couture to photograph her new line of jewellery which I got a strong woodland feel from. I adore all things with antlers and also a good walk in the woods so I knew that we could put our heads together and come up with a great idea for a shoot! I got together with the beautiful Brianna and Robynn and went for a walk through Point Pleasant Park in Halifax and had fun shooting with a cool vintage typewriter I picked up, vintage camera I was given, with some cars that just happened to be there and of course the gorgeous jewellery!

How could we just walk past this car! The owner was even so accommodating as to move it to a different space in the car park so that we had a better backdrop!
I had to have this terrarium ring with the Effiel tower in it and on my trip last month took a couple of shots with it from the top of the tower and with the real tower itself!

Photokina 2012

I know this post is about 3 weeks overdue but hey, better late than never! This photokina post isn’t going to tell you about all the latest gadgets from the biggest companies (Canon, Nikon etc) but it will focus on the things that made me happiest at the trade show in Cologne, Germany.
First stop was Lomography, unfortunately I wasn’t quick enough to sign up for the DIY La Sardinia workshop where they were giving away free cameras (I can’t be too greedy, I do already have one , below) but was very happy to have a 1 on 1 tutorial with a Lomokino camera (shown above) and be able to play around with all the fun props they had to go with their circus theme.

Next stop was up the stairs to Samsung and although I’ve never really liked their cameras I did really like all their displays- breakdancers, waterfalls and lego boats! We also stood in line for 45 minutes to get a photo on a vespa printed on a mug for free but the camera they were using was having problems connecting to wifi and the in camera editing looked very slow going anyway so we abandoned it.

Sony had lots of models to try out their cameras on

The Impossible project was doing demonstrations of their latest technology basically being able to use and Iphone to take a picture, put it on their device and make it an instant polaroid like picture. I’m still not sure how I feel about this- Glad that it opens up more ways for people to use analogue technology but I always loved the feeling of that a Polaroid is like a negative, there is only one of them.

We also stood in line for about an hour to get these photographs taken of us by photographer Walter M Rammler for a project faces@photokina on a hassleblad camera then printed on an Epson fine art printer.

I used a CeWe instant print machine to make these glossy prints and was surprised with actually how nice they came out.

On the opposite end of the scale, Polaroids new digital instant camera disappointed me, with a much smaller amount of megapixels than all cameras on the market and poor printing quality, I feel like this machine could have been made so much better had a little more time and money gone into it. (See printed example of me using one above)

And lastly, my next big purchase is going to be an Epson scanner so while I was chatting to the reps about them I got this print done on one of their printers, and I was again surprised at the quality it came out with. Maybe my ‘anything printed not in a lab on wet lab paper is crap’ mentality was slightly changed. Maybe.

Davis Designs

This shoot made me feel an overwhelming sense of Girl Power.
First off is Nicole, you might recognise her from the blog I posted on Monday about her lovely jewellery. These images were made to promote her Davis Designs line of upscale or costume jewellery. She is such a creative and talented person and cares about the environment enough to up-cycle old plastic into awesome art you can wear!
Lee is Nicole’s best friend and made a new and improved way to make water taste better and be better for you and the environment! Little tea bag-like filters which do something similar to what Britta Filers do but you can use them in your existing bottle and save the plastic! It blew my mind to know someone so young has made such an awesome thing.
Raina is a Mermaid. She uses her teaching background and amazing breath holding skills to teach children the importance of looking after our environment at birthday parties and fundraisers. She is a very inspirational woman to have overcome everything that life throws at her and we all loved to be able to say ‘There’s a mermaid in the basement’!
And last but not least, Bryana Doyscher is an amazing make-up artist and even from just from something simply described by us went over and above our expectations.

Fan-Plastic Eco Accessories

The extremely talented Nicole of Fan-Plastic Eco Accessories and Davis Designs (See follow-up blog post on Thursday) and I got together for a shoot to get some shots of her wonderful jewellery made from recycled plastics like laundry detergent bottles! I love the amazing colours that she gets out of the plastic which comes of course with a lot of creativity and patience. I still remember the burns I got from the jewellery class I took at NSCAD, so always have a ton of respect for jewellery artists!
All of these designs are available in her Etsy shop and you can follow her on facebook!

Mismatched and Kitschy

“Jogger girl”, thats how one group of people from back home know me, because when we went to a Justin Timberlake concert years ago I was wearing a nice silver top, black shorts and white joggers (runners). My reasoning behind it was because I knew the others would be dressed nicely and we were getting a limo to the concert so I didn’t want to be there in a tshirt and jeans but I also knew how much your feet get jumped on at concerts when it’s general admission. So I’m pretty mismatched, and if you know me at all you know how much I value kitsch.
When I found Halifax local Molly’s etsy shop I instantly knew I HAD to do something with these little wonders. I teamed up with model Jocelyn and headed downtown to some of my favourite shops that were lovely enough to let us take a few photos. If you’re interested in any of the jewellery contact me and I can put you in touch with Molly.

2011 lil model competition!

Over the last year I’ve aquired some amazing props to be used in my shoots and as of late haven’t had the chance to use them! So I am running a lil model competition, as most of my props are for little people- everything from cocoons for newborns to a little wooden rocking chair for an up to 6 year old so that will be the main guideline for the competition!

So here’s how it all works-
– You can enter either your child or a child known to you with permission from parents age 0-6yrs
– Parents MUST be willing to sign a model release meaning that the photos can be used by me both online and in printed portfolios and if relevant in some advertising. (I won’t sell the images to any third party sites like stock photos etc)
– Everyone who enters gets a $50 voucher towards any photography session with me
– Must be located on the Central Coast or willing to travel
So do you have or know of a little one that you would love to have gorgeous photos of, some of them wearing some cool props? What you have to do to enter is-
– ‘Like’ then post a photo of the lil model on my facebook page
– Get all your friends to ‘Like’ my page and ‘like’ your photo and the person with the highest ‘likes’ on the 31st of January wins!
